About Angela A Stanton, Ph.D.

Angela A Stanton, PhD, is a Neuroeconomist focusing on chronic pain--migraine in particular--physiology, electrolyte homeostasis, nutrition, and genetics. She lives in Southern California. Her current research is focused on migraine cause, prevention, and treatment without the use of medicine. As a forever migraineur from childhood, her discovery was helped by experimenting on herself. She found the cause of migraine to be at the ionic level, associated with disruption of the electrolyte homeostasis, resulting from genetic variations of all voltage dependent channels, gates, and pumps (chanelopathy) that modulate electrolyte mineral density and voltage in the brain. In addition, insulin and glucose transporters, and several other variants, such as MTHFR variants of B vitamin methylation process and many others are different in the case of a migraineur from the general population. Migraineurs are glucose sensitive (carbohydrate intolerant) and should avoid eating carbs as much as possible. She is working on her hypothesis that migraine is a metabolic disease. As a result of the success of the first edition of her book and her helping over 5000 migraineurs successfully prevent their migraines world wide, all ages and both genders, and all types of migraines, she published the 2nd (extended) edition of her migraine book "Fighting The Migraine Epidemic: Complete Guide: How To Treat & Prevent Migraines Without Medications". The 2nd edition is the “holy grail” of migraine cause, development, and prevention, incorporating all there is to know. It includes a long section for medical and research professionals. The book is full of academic citations (over 800) to authenticate the statements she makes to make it easy to follow up by those interested and to spark further research interest. It is a "Complete Guide", published on September 29, 2017. Dr. Stanton received her BSc at UCLA in Mathematics, MBA at UCR, MS in Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, PhD in Economics with dissertation in neuroscience (culminating in Neuroeconomics) at Claremont Graduate University, fMRI certification at Harvard University Medical School at the Martinos Center for Neuroimaging for experimenting with neurotransmitters on human volunteers, certification in LCHF/ketogenic diet from NN (Nutrition Network), certification in physiology (UPEN via Coursea), Nutrition (Harvard Shool of Public Health) and functional medicine studies. Dr. Stanton is an avid sports fan, currently power weight lifting and kickboxing. For relaxation (yeah.. about a half minute each day), she paints and photographs and loves to spend time with her family of husband of 45 years, 2 sons and their wives, and 2 granddaughters. 2. Danyell, what I found is that eating some foods–particularly grains–can initiate a cross-reaction-allergies. By this I mean that you may be allergic to grain but it shows up as an allergy to dairy or peanuts or similar. There is lots of science behind this; it is referred to as autoimmune conditions. This has happened to me. I was allergic to many things, including peanuts, cashews, olives and olive oil, just to name at least one odd allergy with olives.

I quit grains as I moved to the low carbs diet (not yet keto or carnivore just low carbs high fat), and about a year or so later I went into an ER waiting room with a bag of peanuts… in case I had a reaction–and started eating peanuts. No reaction… I then ate cashews; no problem, and now eat olives almost every day. So conclusion: I was deadly allergic to grains–all grains and not just gluten–only I had no idea, and my body went into hyper-reaction mode trying to destroy grain proteins but aimed at everything I ate.

So back to your allergy: I don’t see how an endoscopy can tell that you are lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance is actually the lacking of lactase, an enzyme that would break lactose up in your duodenum into glucose and galactose. Your duodenum is past your stomach and is part of the small intestines. So, if you are lactose intolerant, you would know that because of diarrhea and painful gases from milk, cheese, cream, some people even butter. If you can have cheese, you are not allergic to lactose though you may still be lactose intolerant. It depends on the cheese.

What I said in the podcast is that the vast majority–not all–of migraineurs are lactose tolerant and love milk, much more than the general population. Not all though, and you may be one who isn’t lactose tolerant. And that’s totally fine. Dairy is not an essential component of migraine prevention; it is merely a perfect electrolyte that is also rich in protein and fat, and so it is a perfect food, in general. However, it is not necessary.

As a migraineur, you are carbohydrate intolerant so the focus should be the removal of all grains, starches, sugar/sweeteners, processed foods, legumes, and most fruits with a few exception. In addition, there is great emphasis on a nutrition-dense whole-food approach with increased water and salt in a high-potassium natural food environment. I recommend you read my book: https://www.amazon.com/Fighting-Migraine-Epidemic-Migraines-Medicines-ebook/dp/B076BZG2V3 and join the Facebook migraine group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/MigraineSufferers/ where we help you learn how to become migraine free.

I am looking forward to having you in our group. 🙂

  3. Danyell Maguire says:

I just watched your video – All About Migraines – an interview, and you said that migrainers tolerate lactose. I get a lot of migraines from food and have also been diagnosed with an endoscopy as lactose intolerant.
What would you suggest for me as I cant have any dairy??
